THE GREAT HOLE IN THE GROUND SWING

January 21-23, 2005

Hosted by West Texas A&M University & The University of Texas at El Paso

Both Parts I & II to be held on the campus of WTAMU in Canyon, Texas

November 20, 2004

Dear Forensic Friends and Colleagues,

The Forensics Programs of West Texas A&M University and The University of Texas at El Paso are pleased to invite you and your forensic teams to attend THE GREAT HOLE IN THE GROUND SWING, now scheduled for January 21-23, 2005, with both halves of the swing to be held on the WTAMU campus in Canyon, Texas.  This reflects a change in the dates originally posted, which turned out to be in conflict with key events.  Since we are now no longer hosting on Super Bowl weekend, we have a new name, as well!   Canyon is located just minutes south of Amarillo, Texas on I-27 and is situated near spectacular Palo Duro Canyon, reputed to be the second largest canyon in the continental United States.  So come on down and join us in THE GREAT HOLE IN THE GROUND SWING, named in honor of Texas’ answer to the Grand Canyon!  http://www.palodurocanyon.com/

In keeping with the friendly ambiente of the southwest, we will be pleased to provide wellness food to all participants on each of the three days of the tournament.  We intend to show you true Texas hospitality by providing your students with as many meals as possible to help defer some of your squad traveling costs.  We are offering supper on Friday, continental breakfast and lunch on Saturday, and continental breakfast and late lunch on Sunday.  Good Eats!

Competition is offered in both NPDA debate and IE.  In Debate, six preliminary rounds of NPDA debate with appropriate elimination rounds will be offered in Part I of the swing.  In IE, all eleven AFA-NIET individual events will be offered in both Part I and Part II of the swing.  Awards will be given to all elimination round participants in debate and all individual event finalists.  Debate and IE sweepstakes awards will be given to the top 3 schools at each tournament; in addition, the top 3 schools in combined swing sweepstakes will receive trophies.

We will use The Joy of Tournaments for registration and tabulation.  Register through their website at

We’re fortunate to be able to offer you an outstanding rate of $59.00 for 1-4 in a room at the beautiful Ambassador Hotel, described as “Amarillo’s finest hotel.”  These lodgings are very nice!  Amenities include hotel format with safe, secure indoor corridors, both T.G.I.-Friday’s and The Park Café on property with room service available, and a fitness room, hot tub, and indoor heated pool.  All rooms are equipped with coffee makers, blow dryers, irons and ironing boards.  Chris, the hotel contact person, is extremely helpful, and will block groups together using pre-check in for groups who fax him their rooming list.  The hotel provides airport shuttle service for groups flying into the Amarillo International Airport.
