Activities for 2008

Selah Place- This year we started a new project to provide a nice an cozy place to everybody. We want to thank Rev. Beverly Jones, Rev. Felicia Hopkins, Rev. Paul Bauernfiend, Rev. Eduardo Rivera, Rev. John Scwarting, Rev. Mark Alexander and Rev. Bill Case who helped improve the office to make this dream a reality.

Gideon's Day- Every two years we proudly host the Gideon's International Association here in UTEP campus. This year the participation of many students made possible the distribution of more than 6,000 New Testaments w/Proverbs and Psalms.

Missions- This year we accomplished three mission activities: Mochilas Felices, Jackets at Sparks, and Dibujando Sonrisas.

Mochilas Alegres- Mission trip to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.  Last summer we gave backpacks, school supplies and tennis shoes to 150 children from two orphanages and a shelter for Tarahumara Natives in Juarez, Mexico.  Every child received those items according to their ages and grade levels.

"Jackets at SPARKS"
- About 24% of families living in El Paso are consider below poverty (this statistic does not include undocumented residents). Sparks is one of the poorest colonias in El Paso. Members from the WF/UCM started this mission's preparation weeks before. They sold cupcakes to raise money for jackets and Trinity First UMC donated blankets to accomplish this mission. Every family living in Sparks received two to four blankets, jackets and what is most important the word of God, and we also prayed for their needs.
Dibujando Sonrisas - God multiplied the jackets we collected for Jackets at SPARKS and we unify our efforts with "Drawing Smiles", a youth movement at El Paso, TX. More than 320 children from an orphanage were blessed by all the toys, blankets, and food they received.

Bible Studies and fellowship-
Our weekly bible study provides free lunch, good fellowship, and of course the teaching of the Word of God.  Sometimes students have the opportunity to share a meditation or special testimony. The fellowship that we had during birthday parties, mission meetings, cookouts, and Posada Navideña were great.

Tasty Treats & Balloon Day-WF/UCM has many wonderful activities to offer to the students. We gather together at Leech Grove Park located in UTEP campus to tell students about all the wonderful activities and we give them treats as well.  We also take prayer requests from students, attach them to balloons and prey for those petitions. We highlighted our spot with balloons and more than 150 students passing by write their prayer petitions.

Annual Retreat- Every summer we have an annual retreat that provides emotional, physical and spiritual relief for the students. We had canoe races in the river, a basketball tournament, had a group bonfire each night, and we played volleyball in the swimming pool.  On our way back we visited Carlsbad which is always a side to see.  One of our students attended to SWIFT retreat and the annual FORUM convention for the second time.

Thanksgiving Dinner- This year St. Marks UMC provided this delicious meal. For students, it is very significant to realize that someone cares for them.
Praise, Honor and Thanksgiving Sunday - Every last Sunday of each month our students help serve the food and take the opportunity to interact with more students.

Fund-raising- This is the first time we see students and members of our board are active in this area. Minerpalooza and Cake Sale: the students sold cupcakes in campus and raised enough money to buy 20 jackets for the mission called "Jackets for Sparks" held on December. Discount Cards: our chairman Togo Railey organized the selling of the $10.00 discount cards that are used for discounts in many businesses and are very convenient since most of the participating businesses are located around UTEP campus. All members of our board and students are participating in this fund-raising activity.
